Manarat Al Riyadh’s sports committee has unveiled plans for a sports month which will run from week 11 to week 14. The sports month will consist of cricket, badminton, squash, table tennis & basketball tournaments as well as teachers vs. students matches. A - somewhat controversial - entry fee of SAR15 has been set but a student who participated in the football tournament last year, organised by the same committee, explained that, “This money is used in providing refreshments and buying essential equipment.”

Over the last few years Manarat has always had football tournaments, consistently ignoring a large portion of the student body that doesn’t play football. The sports month is an attempt to recognise and rectify this error and to engage a much larger part of the student body. However this doesn’t mean that a football tournament will not take place. “Due to time constraints we will not be able to conduct and complete a proper football tournament in the first term and therefore we have one planned for the second term,” Saboor Aajaz, chairman of the sports committee, elaborates.

Sport tournaments are building blocks of a healthy school environment. Since they encourage essential skills like teamwork and competitiveness.
