THE GREAT DEBATES ARE BACK!

Last year Manarat Al Riyadh organised a pioneering debate competition. Many were sceptical in the beginning since many attempts to do something similar had taken place in the past. However by the time the knockout stages came around it was clear that we had finally found success.This year we hope to further build on our success by involving more teams than last year and by debating a greater variety of topics.

When parents send their children to a school they expect their children to receive a good education. However, in my opinion a good education is not only a firm grasp of academics but also the development of many other essential skills. Skills like being able to socialise with friends and leadership skills via being a team captain. But a skill that is almost always ignored is public speaking - the ability to speak in front of a large audience - and this is our aim, that by establishing a debate competition we enable students to speak confidently in front of their peers. An added bonus is that participants also learn the value of teamwork. Also by the end of the competition we will have debated around 10-15 different topics and having to research about them will increase the participant's general knowledge. All universities look for these skills when selecting applicants. Using the certificate they receive at the end of the competition, the participants can enhance their university applications and improve their chances of getting into their dream university. Furthermore, having these skills will also improve their university life and will make it easier to present information to huge audiences. However, nobody ever learns to swim by being thrown in the deep end. With that in mind whoever joins the debate competition will receive training on how to produce and present cohesive arguments.
