<< Part I: Introduction >>
The movie ‘Split’ is considered a whole new cinematic experience. It deals with topics that range from extreme forms of mental illness to how cruel and disturbing society could be. But most importantly, this movie conveys its story in a very daring and disturbing manner.
<< Part II: Brief Synopsis >>
Kevin Wendell Crumb is a patient suffering from Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD). He goes to a psychiatrist named Karen Fletcher. Fortunately for him, they have a very strong relationship between each other, with Dr. Fletcher trying her very best to help him recover. But his case is very….special and weird. He is hiding A LOT from Dr. Fletcher.
Unlike other patients with a maximum of 3 personalities, Kevin has 23 distinct personalities that are constantly fighting each other inside him on who deserves to have the ‘light’, which is the ability to control the body. But that’s not all! They believe that there’s a 24th personality, called the Horde, that isn’t a human, rather a beast. They are trying to get it unleashed so that it could protect them from the outside world. However, a phenomenal turn of events took place when Kevin kidnaped a group of teenage girls.
<< Part III: Review >>
The one thing that the world will forever remember this movie for is the marvelous, striking, acting performance. The way actors switch facial expressions and body language to express each distinct personality is unmatched. Every single personality is conveyed in the PERFECT way, making it hard to believe that these are actually played by the same individual. All thanks to the outstanding actor James McCavoy.
The whole genre of MPD’s was considered a joke before ‘Split’, with acting performances that can simply be described as laughable. But this movie initiated new standards of what’s expected from actors playing characters with mental illness. It inspired the creation of movies like ‘Get Out’ and ‘Glass’.
Although it faced many challenges during post and mid production, which generated many disappointed reviews, ‘Split’ made it out with a performance that is simply unmatched in the genre and shaped the framing of many modern releases after it.
